DE begins 25 years earlier when four young college students on their way home after a night of drinking and partying discover a young local barmaid in a remote area, dying from a stab wound. Despite all the circumstances, there is no evidence, and the police are unable to bring charges. However, the four boys lives and dreams are shattered and the shadow over them never really disappears.

And after pages, the story leaps forward to the present day. This is the too rare story that stays with you. I enjoyed all the descriptions of the Scottish locales. The climax was well done; the last few chapters ramped up to an exciting ending.

In , when four young university students, after a night of carousing, make their way home, one of them, Alex Gilbey, stumbles across the nearly dead body of nineteen year old Rosie Duff, lying in the snow banks of a desolate Scottish cemetery.

While they gather around her body in shock, little did they know that all their lives would be irrevocably changed. Though Alex, the fastest of them, runs for help while the others try to keep Rosie, whom they all know, alive, help arrives too little, too late, for Rosie.

With no real evidence against anyone else and their alibis soft, these four good Samaritans, who were covered in Rosie's blood through their efforts in keeping her alive, find themselves suspects in her murder. Though never formally charged with the crime and with no actual proof or evidence of their guilt or complicity in the murder, the stench of suspicion would follow them and change their lives forever.

Distant Echo (Detective Karen Pirie) -- Paperback / softback [Paperback]

Rosie's crime, however, would remain unsolved for years. Twenty-five years later, the case would be re-opened as a cold case. Alex and his friends, who had gone on to rebuild their lives would suddenly find old wounds being re-opened, as the stench of suspicion would once again waft around them. This time, however, they would begin dying under suspicious circumstances.

Clearly someone has decided them guilty of Rosie's murder and is exacting retribution. Alex knows that unless he acts quickly to try to solve the mystery of Rosie's murder, he himself may be marked for murder. This is a well-written murder mystery that is essentially bifurcated into two segments: There are many masterful twists and turns in the story and the characters are all well-fleshed, making for an absorbing, page turning read. This is a carefully crafted murder mystery that fans of the genre will love.

Alfred Hitchcock would make this into a great movies. Four friends stumble upon a body on a dark, cold night after partying and college highjinks. The story follows their lives and the enormous impact this event has on them until, in the end, it is finally resolved decades later. The author delves into the psychological impact of friendship, secrets, suspicion, unresolved guilt, and vengeance. These human characteristics muddle the many clues that make the final solution seem obvious in the end, but so unobtrusive one cannot be faulted for not tying them together sooner.

Concluding the book,I thought of Chekov and his line about a gun in the first act needing to go off before the play ends. There are lots of guns tossed throughout the story, but they are subtly displayed. The writing is good, the story is plausible and the main characters are well developed and realistic.

One can't help wondering what we would do if we were in their shoes. It all comes together in the end, no strings left untied.

This is a very good mystery. I couldn't put it down and read it over two days. Val McDermid is master of her craft. Good pace of storytelling, believable characters and the ending was a big surprise. I can't wait to download the second Karen Pirie novel. I think I prefer this series to the Tony Hill books where I sometimes gagged over the descriptions of gore.
